DOST-1 conducts disaster preparedness forum today

SAN FERNANDO CITY, July 26 (PIA)- The Department of Science and Technology in Ilocos region conducts a regional forum on disaster preparedness at the Oasis Country Resort here from 9 a.m to 5 p.m on Tuesday.


The wholeday event billed “Forum on Environment and Disaster Prevention and Mitigation” is part of this year’s celebration of National Science and Technology Week observed from July 25 to July 29.


Provincial Director Racquel M. Espiritu of DOST-La Union said participants to the forum are mainly from local government units, academe, line agencies and members of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC-1).


“The forum is aimed primarily to arm local governments and other stakeholders with necessary knowledge in understanding hazard communication tools which are  government’s initiatives to provide early warning in line with disaster prevention and mitigation,” said Espiritu.


Espiritu added,”Local officials are the forefront in informing their constituents and media the information on the ground before, during and after disasters, so they must be able to interpret data from these hazard tools.”


Topics discussed in the wholeday event include lecture and hands-on training on Project NOAH (Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards), Hydromet and Deployment of Early Warning Systems (DEWS) Project, La Nina phenomenon in region one, Coastal Hazards and Storm Surge Assessment and Mitigation, Rapid Earthquake Damage Assessment System (REDAS), among others.


Resources speakers who are experts on their respective field were invited to provide the lecture such as from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services (PAGASA), Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) and DOST.


All activities that mark the 2016 National Science and Technology Week are DOST-initiated and are anchored to the theme, “Juan Science, One Nation.” (PIA-1, La Union)
