Cabugao, Ilocos Sur – To generate interest among locals in beach sports, organizers have staged the second Sun-Soaked Ilocos Sur Festival here beginning January 9.
Featured sports were surf boarding, frisbee, kite boarding, dragon boat racing, beach volleyball, and surfing.
Ilocos Sur Rep. Ronald Singson said the beach festival wants to stir enthusiasm among the youth to get into the water sports.
“Unlike in basketball where athletes should be tall, here, there is no size limit,” Singson added.
He said the athletes are trained to be competitive until they can represent the province in national and international tournaments.
“This is the best time of the year to hold these competitions because of the winds,” Singson said.
The beach volleyball clinic last year and the games of the Super Liga Pilipinas, the biggest and first volleyball league tournament in the country, was brought to the province to prepare the residents on these games
This year the number of athletes that competed almost doubled last year’s figures from 400 to 700 coming from teams in Boracay, Manila, La union and other provinces. The event began on Friday, January 9 and ended with the awarding of prizes and a concert of some of The Voice Kids finalists.
Sports tourism in the province goes well with the surge of tourists in the New 7Wonders Cities finalist, Vigan, who will be given alternative activity in other towns of the province, added Singson.
Singson hopes that the residents will finally get into the beach sports as there are many beaches in the province with clear, clean sandy beaches.
When this happens, families of fishermen can have other ways of adding to their income by selling food and other services to beach athletes and spectators, he said. (MCA/ICR/PIA1 Ilocos Sur)
