DAGUPAN CITY – Pangasinan students are set to face off in the annual Padunungan from October 24 to 25 at the People’s Astrodome.

Organized by the University of the Philippines Subol Society (UPSS)-Diliman and Baguio chapters, Padunungan is an annual inter-campus competition among elementary and secondary schools in Pangasinan which promotes academic excellence and advocates the local culture among the Pangasinense youth.

The UPSS, which was founded in 1975, is a non-stock, non-profit, university-based organization of Pangasinan students whose principal focus is to serve Pangasinenses.

Throughout its 37-year history, the UPSS has constantly functioned as a vibrant avenue for the preservation and promotion of Pangasinan culture, the rendition of service to the province, and the integration of Pangasinan students into the university culture.

“Padunungan” is the fulfillment of the ‘subol,’ (the Pangasinan word for spring) that is within every member and embodies the group’s vision of an ideal education for all youth including the belief that education is not mere academics.

The event opens with a poem recital contest; folk dance competition; on-the-spot essay writing, poem writing and poster making contests and  group inter-campus quiz show among grade school pupils.

High school students will vie on the second day in various categories such as on-the-spot essay writing, Pangasinan essay writing, poem writing, and sandpaper art making contests; mixed campus quiz show; impromptu speaking contest (in Ilocano and Pangasinan); cheerdance competition; group inter-campus quiz show; and the NCeries (NC Educational Resources and Interactive Events Services, Inc.) Astronomy Olympiad. (MCA/AMM/PIA-1, Pangasinan)
