The the “Bayani Challenge 2013” aims to activate the spirit of volunteerism with 3,000 volunteers expected to arrive in the city during the main event on March 23-27, said Dr. Eric Cayabyab of the Gawad Kalinga (GK) Foundation, the project proponent.
“The program, dubbed ‘Isang Bayan, Isang Bayanihan’ offers a unique opportunity for partners to be part of nation-building movement in a relevant way. It will challenge more volunteers and partners to change lives, bring hope to others and build sustainable communities,” he said.
Eddie Cera, head of Gawad Kalinga in Pangasinan, urged the public to participate in the heroic event.
“We are challenging everyone to care and share, not only in helping build houses but also in showing love for other people,” Cera said.
The main event will be held simultaneously in 33 provinces nationwide. This would give opportunity to the volunteers to help build houses, plant trees and mangroves, repaint and rebuild school buildings, and perform other activities in the barangays.
The Bayani Challenge 2013 is conducted in partnership with the local government units, the private sector, and government agencies like the Philippine Information Agency whose current head, Director- General Jose Mari Oquiňena, is himself a GK volunteer. (JCR/VHS-PIA1 Pangasinan)#
