La Union eyes to be the next top rice producer

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, Feb. 19 (PIA) — This province could be the next top rice producer in the country following its nomination in the Rice Achievers Award of the Department of Agriculture (DA).

The Rice Achievers Award is in line with President Benigno S. Aquino III’s “Food Staples Sufficiency Program” which recognizes outstanding provinces, municipalities, and cities as well as agricultural extension workers involved in rice production.

La Union has reached 105 percent self-sufficiency in rice production in 2012 breaking its previous records said Cesar Bucsit ot the tourism office.

DA records show that 6.29 percent of Ilocos Region’s 1.74 million metric tons (MT) rice production came from La Union. The country’s total rice production is 18.03 million MT.

Agriculture Regional Director Valentino C. Perdido said that Ilocos Region has become the fourth biggest rice provider in the country next to Central Luzon, Cagayan Valley, and Region 6.

He said that the province’s rice achievement was made possible by the active support of Governor Manuel C. Ortega and strong coordination between the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist and local government units in the province.

Perdido encouraged rice producers, policy makers, and the public for a more progressive rice production and responsible rice consumption this year, the “National Year of Rice.”

With the theme “Sapat na bigas, kaya ng Pinas” the National Year of Rice program aims for the achievement of rice self-sufficiency for 2013. (MCA /MHH PIA1 La Union with reports from Cesar S. Bucsit/PITO)#
