LAOAG CITY, Feb. 5 (PIA) — Mayor Salvador Pillos of Marcos town continues to recover in a local hospital after surviving an attack in front of a construction site in his town at 5 p.m. yesterday.
The mayor was inspecting a construction project in front of the Marcos Agro-Industrial School when the shooting happened.
According to the Philippine National Police (PNP), Pillos suffered gunshot wounds in his arms and foot.
Police said that gunmen were riding in tandem as they approached the construction site. The police said that one of them walked towards the mayor, drew his .45 caliber pistol and shot him.
Pillos, however, was able to run before the gunman could pull the trigger as nearby laborers were able to warn him by shouting “Umayen Mayor! Umayen! (Here he comes, Mayor! Here he comes!).
The police are still in pursuit of the suspects who immediately fled towards the town’s mountainous part after the shooting.
The police recovered the getaway motorcycle with plate number 1678-ZJ which is registered to a certain Joseph Siazon, a resident of Brgy. Bayocboc, San Vicente, Ilocos Sur.
OIC Provincial Director Sr. Supt. Gerardo Ratuita of the Ilocos Norte Police Provincial Office said the PNP has yet to establish the motive of the shooting.
Pillos, however, believes that the shooting had to do with politics.
The mayor is seeking re-election and is running against a new-comer, businessman Arsenio Agustin.
Pillos said he has been receiving death threats since 2012. He said he had those threats recorded in the police blotter.
Meanwhile, the attempt on Pillos is the ninth shooting incident in Ilocos Norte that was recorded by PNP since January and the first incident involving an election candidate.
Shooting incidents and loose firearms have been a police concern in Ilocos Norte since the start of 2013. (MCA/APT – PIA1 Ilocos Norte)#
