Mothers with ‘special’ children hear lectures on autism

LAOAG CITY, Jan. 31 (PIA) — To promote a better understanding towards special children, the provincial government of Ilocos Norte hosted a lecture on autism, Wednesday, with mothers with special children in the province.

The lecture conducted is part of the events held in observance of the National Autism Consciousness week celebrated on January 21-27.

According to Caroline Cera of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development, the lecture was designed to educate parents on the condition of their children.

“We start to educate the parents first before the public so that they can fully understand and support their children, especially emotionally,” Cera said.

The participant-mothers are from the five Stimulation and Therapeutic Activity Center (STAC) branches across the province which provides free rehabilitation, education and stimulation activities to children with disabilities that will help them to enhance their cognitive development.

The activity was supported by the organization of Autism Association chapter in Ilocos Norte, an organization important in helping parents cope with the disabilities of special children.

Cera said that affiliation with an organization and proper accreditation will entitle the parents to avail of the benefits that the Department of Health is providing to special children such as free assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of their condition by a pediatrician or a psychiatrist.
