SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, Jan. 10 (PIA) — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources 1(DENR-1) hopes to reach its target of 9,630,175 seedlings for planting in support to the National Greening Program (NGP) this 2013, according to Forest Management Specialist II Marietta M. Javierto.
Among the seedlings to be planted include fuel wood, coffee, cacao, bamboo, urban, timber and high value fruit trees.
For Ilocos Norte, 3,052,171 seedlings are required to be planted in the target areas, DENR-1 said.
The province of Ilocos Sur, on the other hand, is expected to plant 1,851, 717 seedlings.
Similarly, in La Union at least 390,820 saplings are intended to be planted while 4, 335, 467 in Pangasinan.
Javierto told the agency has set some 12,000 hectares of forest throughout the region as NGP’s greening target.
The plan exceeds the 2012 targets of 7,121 hectares, she noted.
The DENR could meet and accomplish NGP’s target figures for seedlings until year-end to protect and conserve the environment as one way of addressing climate change in cooperation with its partners in the public and private sector. (ANL/MHH PIA 1 La Union)
