SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, Sept 29 (PIA) — Twenty five children, who are at risk of child labor from Bauang town, were identified as beneficiaries of the Project Angel Tree of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) – La Union Field Office.
The project is one of the strategies being implemented by the DOLE and its partners to ensure that communities are free from child labor, DOLE 1 Regional Director Grace Ursua said.
The children were provided child labor education, educational assistance and school supplies, food, clothing, shelter, mentoring, livelihood and other forms of assistance.
Gary Milla, one of the 25 children at risk of child labor in Bauang town, was joyful as he received his educational package from Mayor Eulogio Clarence Martin de Guzman and DOLE La Union Field Office Head Florello Surell.
The DOLE is also launching the Child Labor-Free Barangays campaign, which will make use of advocacy, rescue operations and support services to families of child laborers or potential child laborers, the director added.
Mayor de Guzman thanked DOLE for bringing Project Angel Tree in Bauang, and vowed that the municipality will be a child-labor free and child-friendly municipality.
Projects Angel Tree was launched by DOLE in order to address the diverse needs of child laborers or potential child laborers by the provision of different kinds of assistance and to minimize the number of child-laborers and help young generations to be more competitive and productive for their future.
To date, Region 1 already has 275 beneficiaries of said program.
During the event, Surell lectured on child labor and child work and its ill effects to educate both the children and their parents.
Present during the event were Social Welfare Officer Erlinda Nunan, President of the Liga ng Mga Barangay Abraham Rimorin, Central West Barangay Captain Erlinda Villanueva, Senior Labor and Employment Officer Agnes Aguinaldo, and Labor and Employment Officer Janette Mendoza to assist in the distribution of educational packages.
