VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur, Sept 21 (PIA) -–Identifying and eliminating fire hazards through fire safety inspection of all residential houses and business establishments in this city this year resulted in the decreased fire incidents, an official of the Vigan Bureau of Fire Protection said.
Floro Oro Orero Lopez, Vigan City Fire Marshal of the BFP said their office conducts intensified fire prevention and safety information campaign through fire safety lectures, seminars and fire drill in different schools, universities, public and private establishments and the Vigan Heritage Village and the tourism area in the city.
Fire prevention and safety tips are also aired on local television and radio stations, Lopez said.
From January to June this year, the Vigan City Fire Station visited 703 residential and business establishment compared to 421 in the same period last year- an increase of 40.11 percent. Two fire incidents occurred for the first semester of 2012 in the city as compared to last year’s eight.
In March 2012, a fire was reported from an unattended candle at the residence of Melanio Aquino of barangay Paratong. It destroyed his P200,000 warehouse. In January 2012 an unattended garbage fire destroyed P30,000 worth of property of Antonia Anicoche in barangay Bongtolan.
The Vigan Fire station is manned by 30 strong uniformed personnel and has six operational fire trucks. With the active support of the City Government, media, non-government groups and the community the number of fire incidents this year has decreased. (ANL/NOA-PIA 1 Ilocos Sur)
