VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur, July 5 (PIA) –- Vigan City joined the Jollibee Foundation’s Busog, Lusog, Talino (BLT) School Feeding program for the first time.
Jollibee Foundation embarked on the program to work with public and private sectors in the local communities to address hunger among Grades 1 and 2 public school pupils and help them stay in school and learn better.
Celerina Agcamaran, city social welfare development officer, said five elementary schools were selected beneficiaries of the program based on the incidence of malnourished children.
The schools are Bulala-Paratong Elementary School, Jose Singson Elementary School, Nagsangalan Elementary School, Pantay Elementary School and Vigan Central School.
The memorandum of agreement signed between Jollibee Foundation and Vigan City Mayor Eva Marie S. Medina indicated that 40 most undernourished pupils selected from Grades 1 and 2 in the 5 identifies schools will be provided with lunch.
Meanwhile, parents of BLT pupils are involved in food preparation and budgeting.
They have to prepare low-cost, nutritious daily lunch for P11, which is the daily feeding allowance per pupil. Parent involvement is needed so that they can learn and apply these learning at home.
There are also identified volunteers who shall monitor monthly, the weight and attendance of the BLT pupils.
The feeding program is for three years and feeding expenses shall be shouldered by the Jollibee Foundation with LGU counterpart.
For the first year, 75 percent will come from the Jollibee Foundation and 25 percent from LGU; for the second year, equal sharing of 50 percent from the foundation and LGU; and for the third and last year, 100 percent will be shouldered by the LGU.
Jollibee Foundation is the corporate social responsibility arm of Jollibee Foods Corporation, which was launched in 2007.
The foundation scales up its BLT School Feeding Program for school year 2012-2013 covering more than a thousand schools.
With this, more than 40,000 public school pupils with 200 pupils from the five schools in Vigan, will be assured of daily lunch, encouraging them to attend school every day.
