Blood supply ample in Pangasinan today, says Red Cross

DAGUPAN CITY, July 6 (PIA) — Blood supply in the province today is sufficient and has even exceeded the required daily stock of the Philippine Red Cross.

This was due to donors who continue practicing the spirit of volunteerism,

Florame Magalong, PRC chapter administrator, said 507 units of blood including are available today at its Dagupan office, exceeding the required 119 stock of blood supply daily mandated by the Department of Health.

From January to May, PRC has already exceeded its target for the first half of the year, she said.

As per DOH requirement, daily supply of blood must be 0.1 percent of the population of the province, which is equivalent to 44,000 bags a year. Each bag contains 450 cc of blood, she explained.

In her personal assessment, she said this is due to the increased number of individual donors and donor groups who continue to advocate and practice voluntary donation.

“Pag ang tao nawalan ng kanin, may option siyang kumain ng tinapay o sopas, pero ang dugo, walang kapalit because blood in itself is already life (If a person loses rice, he has the option to eat bread or soup but blood is irreplaceable),” Magalong said.during the KBP Forum held at the Philippine Information Agency Thursday.

Even with sufficient supply, Red Cross continues to hold blood donation activities like the Pledge 25 where youth and students aged 18-25 are encouraged to donate blood. Students who are in the age bracket of 16-17 but are willing to donate blood will have to submit a waiver signed by their parents.

The Philippines, she said, is one of the countries with an active Pledge 25 program. In Pangasinan, she cited the University of Luzon as an active contributor to the program and encouraged other schools to do the same.

Preparedness of the institution is all year round, Magalong said, adding that it has a standing memorandum of agreement with the National Food Authority for rice supply in times of disasters.

Red Cross also actively participates in health programs and administers training of First Aid and Blood Support requested by various groups with a minimum of 15 participants.

Filipino servicemen in the United States who wish to avail of emergency leaves to be with their family run to PRC because only Philippine Red Cross –issued requests are being honored by the service heads, she said. (ANL/VHS-PIA 1 Pangasinan)
