LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte, June 27 (PIA) — Women from barangays in Laoag City may soon be the city’s candle producers after attending a livelihood training on candle-making to help them earn additional income.
City Social Welfare and Development (CSWD) Officer Aurora Corpuz said 43 women from Barangays 5, 21, Nangalisan A, Nangalisan B and Nalbo attended the two-day livelihood training at the CSWDO.
“This is part of the continuous program of the city government under mayor Michael Farinas through the CSWDO to help the people of Laoag, particularly the women, have an additional source of income by providing them with skills,” Corpuz said.
During the training, Lourdes Punzalan of the Ticanocah Livelihood Training Center in Quezon City taught the participants how to make different types of candles like decorative, gel, aroma and therapeutic.
Edna Yapo, one of the participants, said the training will definitely help her and many women earn extra income. “Many people buy candles as gifts or for their use and decoration,” she said.
With additional creative skills in their hands, Yapo and the rest of the trainees will then become trainers to other women groups in the city’s 80 barangays.
Corpuz said the city government could provide funds for these women to start their business as candle producers of Laoag City.
“We hope that our people will be more productive and their living conditions improve as a result of our livelihood training programs,” Corpuz said. (ANL/CPC-PIA 1 Ilocos Norte)
