VIGAN CITY, May 19 (PIA) — Consistent with the mandate of preserving, protecting, rehabilitating and properly managing the environment and natural resources, the provincial government of Ilocos Sur through the Environment and Natural Resources Management Office (ENRMO) has been executing the “Tagibien ti Kabambantayan ken ti Aglawlaw” (TAGIBIKA) or “Nurture the Mountains and the Environment” program.
According to officer-in-charge Mario N. Ruelos, the TAGIBIKA program is the best example of stewardship of the environment in Ilocos Sur. He said that their office have organized various activities for the month of May, dedicated as the Ocean Month. On May 2, a mangrove planting was initiated in Brgy. Dardarat, San Juan in coordination with the municipal government headed by mayor Bernard Sarmiento. The activity was participated in by barangay officials, Sangguniang Kabataan and Philippine Coast Guard. It was followed by a coastal clean-up on May 16 at Brgy. Sabangan, of the same municipality.
In Magsingal, ENRMO visited the town’s dumpsite and made recommendations on how to improve the dumping facility by implementing the 3Rs which is to reuse, reduce and recycle. It was recommended that a materials recovery facility (MRF) should be established in the area so that they could at least comply with the provisions of Republic Act No. 9003, the Ecological Solidwaste Management Act of 2000.
In observance of the International Biodiversity Day on May 22, river bank planting of different mangrove species is also scheduled in Brgy. Guinabang, Santiago to be participated in by barangay folks, non-government organizations and the Red Cross-Ilocos Sur Chapter.
The activity is an opportunity to discuss to the constituents the importance of protecting the environment and the need for residents to take care and preserve the rich bounty of biodiversity, that encompass the vegetation and creatures of the body of water in various kinds that support each other to survive and flourish, Ruelos said.
To maintain healthy, livable and attractive shores, a coastal cleaning activity will be conducted in Brgy. Lingsat in Sta. Maria town on May 23. (ANL/NOA-PIA1 Ilocos Sur)
