Ilocos Norte and parts of Ilocos Sur to have brownouts on May 17 – NGCP

SANTIAGO, Ilocos Sur, May 16 — The 10 towns and the city of Vigan in the first district of Ilocos Sur and the whole province of Ilocos Norte will experience a 12-hour brownout on Thursday, May 17, according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

Ilocos Sur Electric Cooperative (ISECO) Information Officer Clarence Ducusin said the power interruption is set by the NGCP for the maintenance of transmission lines of electricity that serve the first district of Ilocos Sur and the whole province of Ilocos Norte.

According to Ducusin, the power interruption on May 17, will start at 6:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., affecting the distribution utility (DU) sites in Vigan and Sto. Domingo substations of the ISECO, serving the towns and city of Vigan, Bantay, Cauayan, San Vicente, Sta. Catalina, San Ildefonso, Sto. Domingo, San Juan, Magsingal, Cabugao and Sinait; and the Ilocos Norte Electric Cooperative, affecting the entire province of Ilocos Norte.

“The cause of the 12-hour brownout in those areas had something to do with the annual preventive maintenance of 100-MVA power transformer and its associated equipment at San Esteban Substation, simultaneous with transmission line maintenance activities along San Esteban-Bantay-Currimao-Laoag 115-KV lines,” Ducusin told.

Normal operations will immediately resume after work completion. NGCP’s customers in the affected areas and the general public are advised to take the necessary preparations and precautions for this scheduled interruption, he added.

He said that the specific cities and municipalities to be affected by the power interruption are determined by the abovementioned DU, unless the activity affects the entire franchise area.

“The DU allots the available power within its franchise area and implements the power interruption schedule among the end-users,” he explained. (ANL/FGL-PIA 1 Ilocos Sur)
