MGB seeks partnership with Ilocos Norte media to promote responsible mining

LAOAG CITY, May 13 (PIA) — The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources has sought the support of media members in promoting responsible mining amidst strong anti-mining sentiments from various quarters.

In a forum, chief of MGB’s mine management division in Region 1 Engr. Roel Collado, appealed to members of the Ilocos Norte media to help them with the proper dissemination of information regarding the positive side of mining industry noting their wide access to the general public.

“We seek your partnership with us to ensure that mining laws are properly implemented. The MGB always promotes responsible mining,” he added.

He said, the MGB is aware that the public has some reservations about mining but noted that with responsible mining operations, the communities are the first to benefit from economic growth.

The government was taking note of the anti-mining sentiments of some sectors but added that those opposed to mining have not opened their eyes to its beneficial aspects.

“We engage the media to send us feedbacks on the positive and negative issues on mining and we will address them,” Collado said.

The forum was the first among the many steps of the MGB in enlightening the public about the possibility of mining exploration and its necessity.

The MGB is the primary government agency under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), responsible for the sustainable exploration, development, utilization and conservation of all mineral resources in public and private lands within the Philippine territory.
