Sand festival in Ilocos Norte promises unique event to tourists

LAOAG CITY, May 10 (PIA) — Locals and tourists are in for a unique desert festival on May 10 when the provincial government marks the highlight of the ongoing La Milagrosa Festival at the Paoay sand dunes.

The day-long event, considered as the festival highlight, is dubbed, “Himala sa Buhangin (Miracle on the Sand).” It starts with a line up of sand sports from sandcastle-building and a four-wheel drive race, and live music.

Expected to stir the event are large-scale installations by artist Leeroy New and murals by Gerilya Artists Collective.

New’s installations will later be burned, consistent with the tradition of burning man which goes back 25 years ago when an eight-foot structure was burned on a beach in California. The event inspired provincial tourism planners to replicate the burning and showcase it for the first time in Ilocos Norte.

The provincial government, led by Governor Imee Marcos will host the event in support of Paoay’s unique sand formation and, in the process, promote the dunes as another tourist site.

Free transport services will be available on the day of the event to ferry festival-goers to and from the sand dunes.

Live music will be provided by Wolfgang, Up Dharma Down, Powerpuff Corn, Hidden Nikki, Sleepwalk Circus, Better than Noise while fire-dancers will set the mood for partying.

The La Milagrosa Festival began on May 2 and will end on May 14. The festival is in honor of the Miraculous Virgin of Badoc town.

Novena masses were earlier held in various host towns namely Paoay, Dingras, Sarrat, Batac, Badoc, Vintar, and Bacarra. A grand procession took place on Sunday along the streets of Laoag. (ANL/CCA-PIA 1, Ilocos Norte)
