P-Noy opens Palarong Pambansa 2012

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan, May 8 (PIA) — President Benigno S. Aquino III on Monday formally opened the Palarong Pambansa 2012 at the Narciso Ramos Sports Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC) here.

Aquino, who was introduced by Luistro, praised the competitors, saying, “I am proud of you. I hope that you will become examples of your fellow youth. I hope that you become inspirations for your fellow citizens.”

Assuring the continued support of the government for sports development, Aquino bared the Focus Sports Policy, which is under the Philippine Sports Roadmap of the Philippine Sports Commission.

The policy intends to focus on developing few select sports that include boxing, taekwondo, athletics, swimming, wushu, archery, wrestling, bowling, weightlifting, and billiards.

About P200 million from the annual remittance under the National Sports Development Fund will be used for the purpose, he said.

The same amount has been allocated for the Palarong Pambansa. This was to ensure that the athletes have all the facilities they needed and that the event would go smoothly, he said.

Prior to his speech, Aquino lighted the Urn of Peace and Friendship held by Philippine Basketball Association star and former Palarong Pambansa medalist Danny Ildefonso of Urdaneta City.

The competition, which already started a day earlier, are being held in Dagupan City, San Carlos City, Binmaley and this town. The games will end on May 12.

The President was received by Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Armin Luistro, Gov. Amado T. Espino Jr., Vice-Governor Ferdinand Jose Calimlim, Rep. Leopoldo Bataoil of the Second District, Rep. Georgina De Venecia of the Fourth District, former President Fidel V. Ramos and Lingayen town Mayor Ernesto ‘Jonas’ Castañeda.
