NNC spearheads regional recipe dev’t contest regionwide

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, May 7 (PIA) — To showcase traditional recipes of the region, a Regional Recipe Development Contest was recently spearheaded in the City of San Fernando.

The contest is part of this year’s kick off activity for the Nutrition Month celebration with the theme, “Pagkain ng gulay ugaliin, araw-araw itong ihain” hosted by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) Ilocos Region.

According to NNC Region 1, only six were identified for the cooking contest proper out of the 24 recipe entries submitted to the regional office from all the sectors in region 1.

These recipes include Kangkong Linambonan of Tagudin town; Kangkong at Talong sa Bagoong Alamang of Batac City; Saluyot Burger of Department of Health- Center for Health Development I, San Fernando City; Bola-bolang Kalabasa at Alugbati, a perennial vine found in the tropics where it is widely used as a leaf vegetable with Malunggay Sauce of the city of San Fernando; Tortang Pinakbet of Urdaneta City and Vegetable Lumpia con Peanut of Laoag City.

Judges of the contest include Rita P. Reyes, Dietitian III of Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center; Jasmin Michelle B. Calica, Food Service Supervisor of Max’s Restaurant here; and Doris Joy C. Garcia, Vice Chairperson to the Regional Nutrition Planning and Evaluation Team.

Vegetable Lumpia con Peanut entry of Laoag City was adjudged first prize with P10,000 cash. Second prize went to Urdaneta City’s Tortang Pinakbet with P8,000 cash prize.

The entry of San Fernando City was also judged third with P6, 000 cash prize while other entries were given consolation prize of P2, 000 each.

“Through this kind of contest, people will be encouraged to increase their intake of locally grown fruits and vegetables as these foods are important aspects in our lives in order to achieve our wellness and optimum health being”, said by Regional Director and RNC Chairman Myrna C. Cabotaje of Center for Health Development Region 1 said.

The winning recipes will be compiled into a recipe book that will be printed as an Information Education Communication material for distribution to the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program beneficiaries of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
