6,096 youths work this summer thru Gov’t Internship Program

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, May 3 (PIA) — Adhering to President Benigno Aquino III’s thrust to strengthen the youth by empowering them to improve their skills and potentials, the Department of Social Welfare and Development 1 (DSWD-R1) hired 6,096 youths in the region to work for its Expanded Government Internship Program (GIP).

Among the participating individuals include out-of-school youths, undergraduates and unemployed graduates aged 18 to 30 years old.

Grace Rendon, DSWD 1 focal person on Youth, said in an interview that these interns were assessed and screened in order to prepare them for employment. They were required to submit their biodata, birth certificate and application form.

The summer workers will be deployed to all the 3,265 barangays of the region, field offices, centers and institutions of DSWD and registered NGO’s, according to Iryn Q. de los Reyes, information officer of said agency.

These interns will perform various tasks in the core social protection programs of DSWD such as Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program, Social Pension Program, Supplementary Feeding Program, Cash for Work for Small Scale Farmers and Fisherfolks and Internally Displaced Persons and Day Care Service in partnership with the Local Government Units.

De los Reyes also explained that each youth will receive P 246 stipend per day as they will work for 52 days starting May 2 until July.

DSWD 1 Regional Director Marcelo Nicomedes J. Castillo said GIP provides opportunities for the young people to earn and augment the family income as they develop their skills in preparation for future employment. (ANL/MHH-PIA 1 La Union with reports from DSWD1/Iryn Q. de los Reyes)
